Eveli Torent – an exhibition.

The National Art Museum in Barcelona is hosting an exhibition to rediscover Eveli Torent, a lesser-known but fascinating painter and illustrator from Barcelona, born in 1876. Torent started his art career at Els 4 Gats, a hub for Catalan Modernisme, where he mingled with important figures like Picasso, who even did three charcoal portraits of him.

Torent moved to Paris at the turn of the century, and there he continued his work as an illustrator for popular Catalan magazines and also for French magazines. Since he enjoyed adventures, he later moved to New York (in 1914), and there he get a close relationship both with Hispanic social circles and with Masonic groups. By 1919, he was back in Barcelona, teaching decorative art and drawing from his studio in Plaça Medinaceli.

In 1922, Torent bought a defense tower in Eivissa, Torre d’en Rovira, where he created a summer residence, an archaeological museum, and a quirky monumental park showcasing his eccentric side.

That’s the guy. Does he sound interesting? If he does, this temporary exhibition in the National Art Museum in Barcelona might be something you should visit.
